About Día de los Muertos Calavera Sand Painting

Our Calavera Sand Painting Kit is inspired by Día de los Muertos, the Mexican tradition of remembering and celebrating loved ones who have passed away.

At the heart of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a beautiful idea: the people we love remain with us through our memories, the stories we share, and the ways we honor them.

What’s inside the kit?

Colorful calaveras, or skulls, are among the most recognizable forms of Día de los Muertos art. Often made from sugar, clay, and other materials, they are decorated with flowers, intricate patterns, and brilliant colors that reflect the richness of Mexican popular art.

One of the tradition’s best-known customs is creating an ofrenda, or altar—a special place filled with photographs, flowers, candles, favorite foods, and meaningful objects connected to those being remembered.

The Calaveras (Skulls)

Our kit includes four 6-inch-square calavera designs and twelve colors of sand. The tactile, hands-on process invites you to slow down, choose your colors, and become absorbed in creating something meaningful.

Great for a group

You can enjoy the kit on your own, with family, or with friends. It also includes an introduction to Día de los Muertos and simple instructions for creating an ofrenda.

A learning experience

You do not need to have grown up with the tradition to approach it with curiosity and respect. We encourage you to learn about its Mexican origins, make the experience personal, and remember the people, pets, and ancestors who remain important to you.

Sharing stories and memories

Día de los Muertos is celebrated in many ways throughout Mexico and by communities around the world. This kit does not attempt to represent every regional or family tradition. Instead, it offers a thoughtful starting point: an opportunity to create, share stories, and honor the connections that continue across generations.
May your calavera be colorful, your time creating be meaningful, and your memories bring the ones you love a little closer.
